BENTLEY'S LAW -HB 393 PASSED BY THE TEXAS LEGISLATURE AND SIGNED BY GOVERNOR GREG ABBOTT, click to view: fb.watch/lbi6dNM9Fg/?mibextid=qC1gEa
Derek Ray Treviño, age 19, was killed by a drunk driver.
Derek was on his way back from delivering his last pizza for the evening when a drunk driver crashed into his vehicle. Derek’s mother waited desperately to see her son in the emergency room, she could feel her cells being pulled away slowly from her body as if sensing that her son’s life was being torn away and she was about to lose him. An “I’m sorry” from the doctor made her collapse, with a screeching yell, to the floor.
November 24, 2011 is a day that has branded the family with a horrible memory of losing a loving son, brother, uncle, nephew, grandson, and friend.
Derek lived life to the beat of his own drum. He loved the outdoors and was very independent. He made a lot of good friends during his short 19 years with us. Derek loved skateboarding and at a very young age he won first place in competition.
Derek loved spending time with his father and family from out of town, especially when they all went fishing in the Corpus Christi and Victoria, Texas areas. The family times spent at South Padre Island were the best vacation memories and these memories are very much cherished by his mother and sisters.
Derek decided on his own that he wanted to finish high school by attending the Texas Challenge Academy mainly to experience the military style training that the school has to offer. During his time at the Academy he learned to physically train for endurance and to live a healthy lifestyle. Derek was also involved in community volunteering. He would tell his family and friends that while at the Academy, they taught him that whatever he began to do he should finish; to never leave anything undone and to see it through to the end.
Derek opened up his own landscaping business where he promoted environmentally friendly techniques by using all electric equipment. He was also working at Domino’s Pizza before his passing. Derek was a dedicated employee and had great potential, he was going to be promoted to Assistant Manager the day after Thanksgiving Day after only working there for a few months.
Derek created a garden for his mother; he cleared an area out in the front yard and asked her to plant some flowers. Derek was able to see the beautiful garden he created for his mother and, to this day, his mother takes care of that garden with her heart and soul because it is a constant reminder of her son’s love and his wonderful and kind soul.
Derek left us too soon; a link on the family chain has been broken. For now his family grieves but they keep his memory alive every single day. Derek’s mother, Elizabeth Alonzo, founded LADD (Laredoans Against Drunk Driving) because Derek’s life mattered as well as the lives of the many others who have fallen victim to drunk driving. Elizabeth cares for her community and together with other families of victims and volunteers she wants to continuously promote awareness of the dangers of drunk driving in the hopes of preventing another family from going through the same unbearable grief. Life is too precious and these types of fatalities are 100% avoidable if people make the right choice.
Derek will forever be missed by his family and friends, but especially his mother who has made a lifetime commitment to keeping his memory alive so that new family members know that they have an uncle who would have loved and protected them so much, but a drunk person who decided to get behind the wheel to drive ended that chance.

LADD-Laredoans Against Drunk Driving organization donated backpacks with school supplies to the children of Casa de Oración Church. Pastors Julio Cesar Patiño and Martha Claudia have always supported our family and the message we have as the sign says. We do this in honor of my son In Loving Memory of Derek Ray Treviño and the many victims.

Our LADD family mourns our Vice President Rosy Gregory who passed away Nov. 21, 2017. She was a great advocate in our community. and she will be dearly missed. Rosy was always promoting safe driving and while making presentations would loudly advocate and say "NOBODY GIVES YOU THE RIGHT TO DRINK AND DRIVE" Rosy became an advocate against drunk driving at the early age of 19 when her best friend Amy was killed by a drunk driver. We honor Rosy.
I had the pleasure and honor of being invited by some of my Derek's friends and other skateboarding aficionados who are setting a goal to have a "Memorial" multipurpose skate park built in our downtown area. This is a great opportunity to be part of the revitalization of our downtown.
These young folks would love to be included in the actual planning since they are the ones who know the different slope angles, drops, etc like other out of town skate-parks are built in other cities. Their input is valuable. Not only will it be a skate park, but an area to have yoga, walking, green space, and other great activities for the whole entire family to enjoy; multi-purpose. Join us! Sign up via e-mail if you want to be part of this movement so that Laredoans have a park to be proud of. Email: [email protected] Thank you. -Liz Alonzo-Villarreal |
Our PSA: Laredoan's Against Drunk Driving
A very important House bill just passed pending Senate approval this bill is designed to reduce the deaths caused by DWI the first time DWI offender would be required to have an ignition lock in vehicle vs suspension of license. Although the best thing is to drive sober before it's over bills like these in Arizona and New Mexico have shown a decrease of death caused by DWI crashes. http://www.legis.state.tx.us/tlodocs/82R/billtext/html/HB02246I.htm
The following slogans have been around for years and perhaps have saved countless lives so they are worth repeating:
Don't Drink and Drive!
Don't Drive Drunk!
Friends Don't Let Friends Drive Drunk!
Think Before You Drink!
Now LADD says:
DRIVE SOBER BEFORE IT'S OVER!
Don't Drink and Drive!
Don't Drive Drunk!
Friends Don't Let Friends Drive Drunk!
Think Before You Drink!
Now LADD says:
DRIVE SOBER BEFORE IT'S OVER!
LADD made it to the state of Minnesota!
